Are there any gotchas that I should know about? I have an existing AD all
win2k servers. I want to put exch2003 on a win2k server.

1) Don't put your Exchange box on a DC. If you do you can only create
accounts with mailboxes on that DC and when you are ready to upgrade to 2003
you will hate the migration. I have done it for several customers and a 4-8
hour job /server becomes a 2-5 day job if everything goes right.

2) It is recommended that you put exch2003 on Win2003, partially because
Win2k3 has some add features that Win2k does not, but it can be done.

3) Win2K is on "extended support" i.e. security upgrades for Win2K will not
as frequent or comprehensive as Win2K3. I.e. your exchange box will become
less and less secure as time goes on. If you are in SOX or HIPPA regulated
environment, expect your auditors to scream bloody murder and flunk your
audit in 2006 because of this.

4) If at all possible, deploy it in a test environment first - be prepared
to blow the machine up a couple of times during this - imaging software comes
in real handy, because you can take images of different stages, and then when
you are ready to blow the machine again, you can just install the image of
when you want to go to, rather than install everything from scratch.

Excellent response. Thank you. I have been debating if I wanted to upgrade
that server to 2k3 before I loaded exchange on it. We have a limited budget
here, so I will have to make a business case for the upgrade. Which I think
I can do.
