Installing the firewall while online does make your machine vulnerable,
particularly as you have no anti virus cover. But don't panic it isn't a
disaster. Visit http://free.grisoft.com and download the Free version of AVG
anti virus. Once downloaded, log off the internet and then install AVG. Once
installed log back onto the internet and update the virus definitions. Once
the virus definitions have been installed then do a complete virus scan of
your system.
In my opinion, Avast antivirus is better than AVG. I had AVG and it's
soon to be a paid-for program, no longer free,
plus Avast found four
Trojans on my computer that AVG never detected. Avast is still free,
and better than AVG.
AVG Free is *still* going to be free. You need to review this page:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
They're simply replacing v7.1 with v7.5

No, that's not correct. The old free version is (or will soon be) no longer
supported. However
the new AVG 7.5 is still free.
See http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5
No two antivirus programs detect exactly the same set of viruses, trojans,
etc. They all mostly overlap, but any single program will detect some
malware that any single other program will miss. None is perfect.
So Avast may have found some Trojans that AVG missed, but AVG undoubtedly is
able to detect other malware that Avast would miss.
All that said, I personally prefer Avast. But they are both good products.

I would agree with that. I was happy with AVG until I thought I
needed to switch because I had mistakenly thought it was soon to
become a paid-for application. So I switched to Avast and it found
those 4 Trojans.
And when I asked my Outlook Express question awhile back, the least
you could have done was direct me to the relatively new (on my server)
Oulook Express group because when I got this new computer in June and
I was subscribing to newsgroups, the only Outlook Express group I
could see was a Chinese one. After I refreshed the new newsgroups in
my newsreader, I finally found the one Malke had referred someone else
to.
So shame on you all for ignoring me then.

Gail
Gail, everyone has there own personal preference when it comes to software.
I've tried free versions of AVG (which incidentally 'is' staying free) and
Avast and find them equally as good. Some people will use nothing else but
Norton Anti Virus or Mcafee. Personally, i wouldn't touch either Norton or
Mcafee, but that is my personal opinion.
My brother recently had a new laptop, it came pre-installed with Norton
Internet Security. As soon as we finished registering and activating the
laptop i immediately stripped Norton internet security off the laptop and
installed AVG and Zone Alarm.
I beg your pardon? Let me make this very clear. This is a peer support
newsgroup. We are all just Windows XP users here, helping each other if and
when we can. We are not Microsoft employees (not even those of us with
"Microsoft MVP" behind our names; that's an honorary title for having
provided consistently helpful advice) except for an occasional employee who
posts here unofficially on his own time.
Nobody owes you or anyone else any kind of help here. If you didn't get an
answer to a question you asked, it may be because nobody knew the answer, it
may be because you asked it poorly and nobody understood the question, it
may be because the person who knew the answer didn't have the time for
newsgroups that day. It may be for lots of other reasons. I don't remember
the particular question you mention, and I have no idea why I didn't answer
it. I may not have even seen it.
If you don't like the free service you get here, take your business
someplace where you pay for what you get and where you can legitimately
complain about not getting answers. I don't appreciate getting complaints
from someone who I tried to help.
Jyeshta said:I have apologized in another post. Of course I realize that no one
here owes me anything. It just hurt a lot to be ignored when other
people with Outlook Express questions were getting referred to the
proper newsgroup.
As I said, I am going through hell at this time in my life. I
apologize for lashing out.
You *have* given me much useful help on this newsgroup, as have some
others. I *am* grateful for it.
With appreciation and best wishes,
