Depending on what you're downloading and where you're downloading it from,
and how you choose to download it, much of that stuff doesn't automatically
run after the download. Some of it is zipped and you have to unzip it,
others are executable files that you have to find and run.
The reason for that is so that you could download this stuff on one
computer, save it to a disk, and install it on another computer. If it all
ran automatically, you'd have a hard time upgrading a computer that couldn't
get on the Internet.
Some patches and upgrades are supposed to run automatically.
But without knowing what it is you're downloading, it's hard to say whether
yours should run automatically or not.
