Hi, I am new to laptops and Vista (got an old pc running on ZP). When I am
connected to the mains supply the battery icon in the trayer says "63%
available (plugged in not charging). Is this normal to only have 63%
battery? Especially when I am plugged in to the mains. I would have thought
it should go to 100%?

confused?!!

If you leave it plugged in but not powered on, does the charged
level/available increase? At some time, it should go to 100%. If it does
not, it might indicate a battery fault (old?) or a charging system fault.
This can take hours, depending on charger capacity.

On laptops I'm familiar with, when you plug it in, it starts charging
the battery. Rechargeable batteries don't recharge immediately, so
you'll get a reading like you're seeing at first. The longer you keep
it plugged in, the higher that reading will get, until the battery is
fully charged.

What bothers me here is that it says "plugged in not charging". Why
isn't it charging?

This is weird... It's better to contact the store or laptop manufacturer.
It seems to be a hardware problem.

Anyway, try to discharge it and recharge again your laptop.

For accurate measurement, a laptop need to be discharge and re-charge upto
100% at least once a month.

How to prolong your laptop batter

Also, Don't leave your laptop plug in the computer everyday,
It will speed up the aging of your battery. you can keep it at least 40%
then store the battery.

Hi,

If you've got a Dell Inspiron, post your question at:

alt.sys.pc-clone.dell

This is a great newsgroup for Dell owners.

This is the first sentence in the article you reference:

"A Lithium-ion battery provides 300-500 discharge/charge cycles. The
battery prefers a PARTIAL charge rather than a FULL Discharge. Because
of this, frequent full discharges should be AVOIDED as much as
possible because it will lessen the life of the battery."

Kinda shot yourself in the foot on the "discharge and re-charge"
advice, huh?

Hey Nonny,

To calibrate the span once in a while. you need to discharge and recharge it
for at least once a month.

Anyway, read more at batteryuniversity.com...
Once, I have a problem with my DELL laptop.
I already contacted Dell and guess what
No replies, When I send an email to Mr Lawrence,
He knew the answer quickly and it really save
me a lot of money to buy a new laptop.

Thanks to him.
