Inserting video into PP 2002

We created a presentation in PowerPoint 2002 with videos
we created in Windows Movie Maker 2. On the computer we
created the presentation with, everything works fine. We
burned a cd to use in a laptop on the road, and the
videos wouldn't work in the presentation.

The videos run fine from the laptop in WMP 9, but we
can't re-associate the video files in PP. The error
message reads, "PowerPoint couldn't insert a movie from
the selected file. Either the file is non-standard, or
QuickTime is not installed properly."

The video will not run in the MCI. We've checked the
codecs, and they match between the desktop used to create
the presentation, and the laptop.

The video will not run on the laptop in safe mode, either.

System specs:
Desktop: Dell Dimension 8250, P4 3.06 GHz HT, 512 MB RAM
Laptop: Dell Latitude CPxJ 650 GT, PIII 650 MHz, 512 MB
RAM

Both systems run WinXP SP1, PowerPoint 2002, WMP 9, and
Windows Movie Maker 2.

Any thoughts would be helpful. TIA...

Bob,

It sounds like you are missing the codec needed to playback the video on the
laptop.

One workaround may be to install windows movie maker (just to install the
correct codec) on the laptop. Then remove windows movie maker from the
laptop if it breaks the licence agreement. Hopefully It will leave the codec
behind!

TAJ,

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, the video codecs
match perfectly, down to the version numbers.

I'm not sure why you suggested the workaround though. I
would think Microsoft would want us to use WMM 2 to
insert video into PP presentations.

Sonia,

Thanks for the response. We have gone thru section 3 in
depth, and it is not working. What makes it more
confusing is that we tested it on a different laptop, and
it works on that laptop. We verified those settings as
well, and everything appears to match.

I'm really confused...Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Bob

If the video won't run in mplay32.exe, then I would certainly suspect the
MCI settings in the Registry. I think there is merit in TAJ's idea of
installing Movie Maker on the laptop. It is a free download and can be
installed on both machines. Other than that I can't think of what the
problem might be. Oh, how did you insert the movie in the presentation?

I wouldn't worry about that message. You created the video on the other
system and all of the source files are there. You shouldn't be able to
"save" the file on the laptop because the authoring wasn't done there.

You said:
As an aside, we can't insert the WMM sample files into a
PP presentation either.

That is good information. It tells me that the laptop is missing some
critical component.

On the laptop, can you go to Start > Run and type regedit and then navigate
to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\MCI32

What is the value that you see in the Data column for MPEGVideo?

Finally, on the laptop can you go to Start > Run and type DXDIAG and click
OK. What version is reported?
