inserting sound files

I am unable to insert sound from a file in my powerpoint presentation.
The message I get is "Powerpoint couldn't insert a sound from the
selected file." The sound is an MPEG4 file from my itunes. Please help!

Are you sure it's a sound? MPEG4 is a video format.
