Is it possible to insert a picture in power point in such a way that it
initially appears large in the center of the screen and then shrinks to
another spot (say on the edge of the screen) and remains there while another
picture is inserted? this next picture would appear large in the center of
the screen and then shrink to another spot on the edge of the screen.

Sure, I use this technique all the time. What version of PowerPoint are you
using?

In versions before PowerPoint 2002 this is rather difficult, while in
versions 2002 and later it is fairly simple.

In PowerPoint 2002 and later ...
-Insert the picture in the center of the screen and size it till it looks
right.
-Select the picture and apply the following animations.
-Entrance => Compress => On Click
-Emphasis => Grow/Shrink => On Click
-Motion Path => Custom => Line => With Previous
Draw the path from the center of where the picture is to the center of
where you will want it to be (don't worry about size, yet).

Now you will need to change the Emphasis Grow/Shirk.
-Select the animation
-In the size pulldown, select Custom,
then select the number in the custom size box
-Delete it
-Type 25 and make sure you hit the Enter key.

This should get you on the way to what you are looking for.
