Inserting picture from file

It seems as if I cannot insert a picture in portrait format !? Can this
really be correct?

I have tried and tried, and every time a picture is in portrait format
the insert process just ends up with no result.

Please outline the steps you are doing to insert the picture. Please include
version of Word and OS.
