Hi,
in word 2000, I want to insert page numbers in such a way that the
numbering starts from the second page ie the first page of the document
should not be numbered. the second page should start with the page
number 1 and so on..
how can i accomplish this?
thanks in advace.

Go into View> Headers & Footers, click the Page Setup button, and check
the box to say 'Different First Page'.

Scroll to the next Page (where you want the page numbering to start),
in the 'Start at' box, put 0 in. Now click on the Insert Page Number
button and the second page will be numbered as Page 1.

Be careful though, it will still say page 2 in the status bar of your
document, just be aware of that.

If we set actual 2nd page to print as 1, and use your technique below
(Thanks for it!)
but status shows 2 instead of 1, will this throw off page numbering in TOC
and index?

Thanks for warning us of page numbering discrepancy.

The TOC always reflects the { PAGE } field that is printed on the page. So
if you restart numbering in each section, the TOC will show 1 for the first
page of each section.
