Inserting Embedded stuff from Word and Excel

Trying to get a job as PPT operator and on a test I had, I needed to insert a
template doc with header and bullet points and edit it within ppt. In PPT,
the sequence I used was Object | Create from File | Browse | select word doc
= no problem. I had to ungroup to edit, that's when I got into trouble (bits
and pieces everywhere!) - what did I do wrong? Thanks
 
Instead of ungrouping, double clicking on the object should allow you to edit
the file.
