When I try to insert a picture in table, access won't
insert it as an object but will insert as package. I've
tried to reinstall program and install filters in custom
install.

Hi David,

Access will attempt to use the program that the file association is set to
in the registry for the machine (not the user). If the associated program
is not a suitable OLE server for the file type, then Access will use
"package" as the default OLE Server. This typically occurs because a file
type, like jpgs, are associated with a program like Internet Explorer, which
is not a suitable OLE server for jpeg files.

Assuming you have a suitable OLE server installed, you can usually get
around this problem by choosing "create new" instead of "create from file"
when inserting the object and specifying the program you want to associate
with it.

What file type are you inserting and what program is associated with the
file type?

I am having this exact problem. I am inserting a JPG and
the program association is IRFANView. How do I know if
there is suitable OLE Server installed?

The only way you're going to know is by testing them out. Try inserting
the images using the "create new" option instead of "create from file".
This way, you can specify the program you want associated with the picture.
I use PhotoShop for this on my machine and it works fine. Microsoft Photo
Editor ships with some versions of office and it works even better for this
purpose.

Changing the machine's default file association can be a little trickier,
especially with newer versions of Windows. If you have Photo Editor, that
program should set up itself as the machine's default when its installed and
is usually the easiest way to go. Many times, however, I've had to hack the
file association settings in the HKLM section of the registry to get it
working the way I want.
