I did a PowerPoint presentation and copied and pasted .bmp
and .jpg images into the slides but when I closed
PowerPoint and then tried to re-open my presentation, it
said that the extension .ppt couldn't be opened. Is there
some way I can insert these file types in the presentation
and then re-open it and view it successfully? I am using
PowerPoint for Windows 95 (even though I have Windows 98)
version 7.0b.

Hi Katie,

You probably mean that you are using PowerPoint 95 (version 7.0) on a
Windows 98 system. There are several newer versions of both, but the ones
you are running will do what you are asking.

As a side note:
While it is possible to cut/copy/paste into PowerPoint, it is much better to
use the Insert Pictures from file method instead. By saving the files to
the hard drive first, and then inserting them into PowerPoint, you will save
yourself a lot of trouble down the line.

Back to your question:
Not being able to open a file by double clicking on it, suggests that the
file associations are not correctly set. The file associations tell the
Windows operating system (Windows 98) what program should be used to open a
given extension (PPT is supposed to use PowerPoint, for instance).

You will need to look over the following FAQ page to repair the
associations:

In addition to Bill's info, if you open PowerPoint and go to File > Open,
you should be able to open your presentation.
