Inserting AVI's in 2003

When I insert and then run a AVI file in pp2003 the program freezes then shuts down. How do I overcome this?

If you have a sample *.AVI (less than 1 MByte in size) which exhibits this
problem in PowerPoint 2003, I would be glad to have testing look at it to
determine whether or not it's an issue with a known root cause or something
new.
