I want to be able to play an audio clip with each picture
on a slide show. have the slide show and have the audio
clips but how to tie them together is my problem.

With Window XP, you have Movie Maker 2.
Open it. On the opening page, look at the menu. Select Import Pictures to
get started and then add music.
To open it. Click on Start, click on Run, All Programs, Accessories,
Entertainment, Movie Maker.

You can also use a simpler program, available here:

Much simpler to learn and use but more limited.

Hi John.
I also only got Movie Maker with XP but version 2 came as an automatic
update last January, as long as a person scans for update from time to time,
it installed itself and replaced the first version. However, some seldom or
never scan for updates so I will keep this MM2 site in mind.
I don't know what you get if you purchase XP today or a PC with XP installed
on it. Are most of the updates included? Would be nice to know, since when
providing answers I always think everybody is up to date.

Hi Yves,

Well, I don't allow any auto updates so I was not
aware of that. There are probably quite a few
users who have not yet updated.

I think subsequent releases of XP include some
updates but I suspect that there are always a few
that you must search for and download.

Do you have Plus! Digital Media Edition?

Yes, I have Plus! Digital Media Edition. I updated to version 2. I like it
to make movies out of still pictures, add music and narration. Very easy to
use.

I like the updated version because you can copy the movie to a CD-R to make
a VCD to play the movie on a TV with a DVD player.
I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the picture on the TV.
Everything I tried before to make a VCD resulted in poor or mediocre picture
quality.
