Inserting an object: file name embedded, not file contents

Had no problem embedding file contents in Ppt 2003. File contents appeared
in the slide, as expected. In 2007, just the name of the file (holding the
contents) is inserted in the slide. (The file type is file. The contents is
PDF read only).

Many thanks!

Hi, Steve. Thanks for the quick reply. I followed the same steps as you
did. However--I think I've discovered the problem:
The file I inserted was shown as file type "file" (which contained the pdf
file). I tried it with a different, straight pdf file and it worked just
fine. I think I need to convert the file type to pdf--in other words, break
the pdf object out of the current "file" type, and then insert.

I know I'm probably not explaining this accurately but I can see now it's
not a Ppt problem. It's a file type problem.

This file was transmitted to me via e-mail. I think the problem originates
with the sender. When attaching files to an e-mail, there is a field
allowing choice of type of file and the default choice is "all files". If
sent as the default choice, there are no problems--the file is saved in it's
original format. However, if inadvertently sent as another file type, the
original file is embedded in that new file type.
I have had this problem in reverse--i.e., I have sent a file (whether WORD,
PPT, etc) and inadvertently sent it as file type "file" and the person on the
other end not be able to open the file, simply because they didn't have that
particular piece of software for "file". It's a matter of paying attention
to what the file type is when attaching and prior to sending.

Please note--this is a guess on my part. If you'd like, I can send you the
file. The icon for it is simply a blank piece of paper.

If you recognize what's happening, please let me know.

Thanks!

I use Outlook!! I'm right now having to go back and pull up deleted e-mails
and save the attachments again as some of them have saved with the extension
"file". Which creates the problem. Yet I cannot recall having saved them in
this manner. It seems to happen "when I'm not looking":)

Thanks again Steve. Just for the record in this string: In a prior e-mail
above, I stated that I thought the problem was on the sender's end. However,
it can happen on either end, as I discovered. I'll go to the Outlook forum.

Update: I figured it out. A pdf file just came in as an e-mail attachment.
I right clicked and hit save as. The window came up asking where to save it
to. The file name was a hodgepodge of numbers, so, before saving it, I
renamed it to something that made sense to me. In the process of renaming
it, I removed the file extension (pdf). After saving it to it's location, I
checked it and noticed that it had a new file extension name--file.

I went back to the e-mail, and saved the pdf file without changing the name.
I then went to the saved location and there I changed the name. Presto!--no
problem. The file extension did not change--it remained as pdf. Problem
solved.
