inserting a movie

My friend and I both have Dell laptops and both use
PowerPoint 2002. I use Windows 2000, he uses Windows XP.
My PowerPoint is version 10.2623.2625, his is version
10.4205,4219, sp-2

I can import a video movie into my presentation. It's
a .mov file. It inserts into my presentations fine.

His PowerPoint won't let him insert the file. The error
message says, "The movie file cannot be inserted. For more
information, click Help."

We've tried a bunch of fixes and no luck. Do you have any
suggestions?

Thanks so much for any help.

The first question would be, what version of QT was the file created in?
Who created the file and how was it created? Are you both inserting the
file exactly the same way?

You should both probably compare notes on your MCI settings. See section 3
of http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/multimedia.htm for what
the settings should be.

Just out of curiosity, what version of Windows Media Player do you each have
installed?

Sonia,

Thanks for your help.

On the "bad" computer. Windows Media Player 9.00.00.2980
is installed. On the "good computer" -- the one that will
insert mov files into PowerPoint -- Windows Media Player
version 7.10.00.3059 is installed.

I went through your pdf tutorial and went through the reg
edit files on the "bad" computer and cannot find a "MCI
Extensions" folder following that path. Also, maybe I'm
misreading the tutorial but I don't see instructions on
how to change the contents of the folder.

Next step? Thanks.

My immediate suspicion would be Windows Media Player, but it's not based on
personal experience. I do know that WMP 9 makes some significant changes
that affect media in PowerPoint. I don't have a MOV file to test with here.
Can you convert the MOV file to another format and insert it?

Try again with regedit. You might have to do a search for "MCI Extensions",
but I'm pretty sure that Key path is the same on Win2K. It's not a folder,
and we don't provide instructions for modifying your Registry. If you
aren't already familiar with the process it is not something you want to
learn on a "production" machine. But, if you can't find it, you can't
change it. <G>

Hello,
I have a similar problem. I want to insert a QT movie
(*.mov) donwloaded from the internet into a PowerPoint
slide on a Dell but I get the message "PowerPoint couldn't
insert a movie from the selected file. Either the file is
non standard, or Quicktime has not installed properly."

I have the free version of QT which I downloaded recently.

I will appreciate any advice on this. The movie is less
than 400 Kb. The 5 Mb version also does not work.

Thanks,

Cesar
