When I try to insert a file of any type except the default types of HTM or
HTML, FP gets an error. It happens just by clicking on the list of other file
types. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Where are you trying to insert this file?

In general, you must import the file into your current open FP web, then you would create a link to
it. If it is a image (jpg, gif), then you would insert it on your page.

I'm trying to insert it into FrontPage. The problem is the "Insert File" box.
If I click on the list to change file type I get an error. That is before
even specifying what file I want to insert.

I tried Detect and Repair. I didn't fix the problem. Someone mentioned insert
problems in other Office applications that was caused by the Internet
Explorer security patch KB908531. Does anyone know more about this? What
happens if you don't use the patch?

RLB - I had almost indentical problems to yours. After removing KB908531,
Front Page has worked flawlessly since. My computer doesn't seemed to be
affected by not having the patch.

When I went to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165, as you specified
Kathleen, it didn't give me an update to download. Instead it only has
instructions to fixing my registry. However, my registry already has the
change in it. (note: I haven't uninstalled KB908531 yet but I wanted to
loacate KB918165 first. Isn't KB918165 an update?) I also went to the
microsoft update website and tried to find missing updates. It says I'm
up-to-date.

KB908531 has been revised at least once since it was originally released in
April. See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165 If you have
uninstalled it, you may want to use Windows Update to get the most recent
version.
