Inserted music will not play

I've followed steps to insert music into various slides. Get the sound icon and message asking if want to start automatically. Indicate yes. Music does not play either when I try to preview it or in the slide show view. Using PPT 2003 and Windows XP. Songs copied into the computer with Windows Media from CD's. Cannot figure out what I'm doing wrong. Can anyone help?

What format are the audio files (.mpg, .avi, ?). Can you play them on your
computer outside of PowerPoint? If they do play outside of PPT, in PPT, in
slide edit view, right click the audio icon and select Play Sound. Does it
work here?
