In PowerPoint 97 gif animations were not supported. The gif file would
appear static; locked on the first frame of the animation.
In PowerPoint 2002 (XP), gif file animations are supported, but only while
the presentation is running. In the design/build/edit screen, the gif file
will remain static.
In both cases the gif shows on the edit screen, but does not move.
The preview (for clipart) in PowerPoint 97, is part of the office set of
programs. Some office programs supported motion graphics (so the preview
software supported it also), some programs in office did not. PowerPoint in
Office 97 did not.
