windows xp, powerpoint 2002

When I 'Insert > Picture' and find a file to insert, the
other images on the screen automatically downsize, and a
large 'Click to Add Title' text box comes on. This never
happened in the past, and I'm not sure why it is now.

Any help greatly appreciated.

See this, especially the part about Automatic Layout.

Do this before using PowerPoint seriously

Hello Doug,

You will be glad to know that this specific behavior (for inserting
pictures) has been addressed in PowerPoint 2003 (Automatic layout changes
are not triggered by inserting pictures). In the meantime, for PowerPoint
2002 you can disable the automatic layout setting by:

1) "Tools -> AutoCorrect Options"
2) In the "Autoformat as you type" tab, turn off the "Automatic layout for
inserted objects" setting and
3) Click "OK"
