Insert Disc error message

When I put a dvd disc into my DVD drive, I get a message "Insert Disc into drive" Well I have one in it and it wont recognize its there. Also too my autostart on my cd/rw wont autostart either.This has been going on for 6 months nowand I cant afford to take it to a shop. My system is WinXP Home edtion

Check the cable. It may be losen.
Try another disc. or put a music cd to see if it works.
