Insert Chart Error in PowerPoint 2007

Guest

Upon attempting to insert a new chart in PowerPoint 2007, I receive the error
message: "To insert a chart, you must first close any open dialog boxes or
cancel editing mode in Microsoft Office Excel."

Only thing is, there are no open dialog boxes and Excel is not running. I've
rebooted and retried with a blank presentation but I still get the same error.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Echo,

I think you are onto something. Inserting the chart DOES work if I launch
Excel first. However, if I close Excel the problem still persists.

I am using AVG Anti-Virus version 7.5.

I don't think AVG is the problem. I have it here, and I'm not seeing the
same issue. But you might try disabling it just to see. Won't hurt to try.

Are you working on Vista? There's some bug with PPT 2007 crashing if you try
to edit the data in a chart without opening Excel first on Vista. I wonder
if this is related.

I couldn't find anything in the knowledgebase on your particular error
message, and unfortunately, I also can't find the one about editing chart
data on a Vista system (which I *know* is there somewhere, grrr). I'll keep
looking for that last one -- maybe it will give some clues as to why your
problem happens.

The more recent versions seem to be more likely to cause trouble than earlier
ones. And I'm guessing you've got its Office file scan feature disabled.

That'd be a good starting point for kcoakley

Echo/Steve,

Thank you both for the suggestions. We're running Windows XP Professional
here with Office 2007 installed alongside of Office 2003.

The issue is on a co-worker's machine, so I will test your suggestions ASAP
and post back my results. Oddly, we have 4 machines here configured
identically and hers is the only one with this problem.

- The problem persists with AVG disabled.
- After the initial error message, a second message pops up that says "Some
chart types cannot be combined with other chart types. Please select a
different chart type."

I've tried several chart types with no improvement and I'm trying this in a
blank presentation.

Hi Echo S,

I ran the diagnostics and I'm happy to report that doing so corrected the
problem. (Who woulda thunk it?)

I was watching the progress on the diagnostics and everything was going fine
until it reached "package 15 of 15" in the "Setup" section. The diagnostics
seemed to really slow down at that point, and then I was notified that
"repairs were made."
