Do you know if the new CPU's are compatible with current mainboards, (NForce
4) and will a BIOS upgrade be required in order to operate OK?
the prices seem very competitive.

I believe so. The prices don't look quite so competitive to me, though I
guess if it's less than twice the price for two cores rather than one, it's
okay if you're using multi-threaded software.

I don't think it's such a hot deal yet either... Though socket 940
prices are a whole lot worse for dual cores.

The only one that looks interesting to me is the 4400+, and at nearly
$600 I'm not quite ready to plunk that down for it. I generally try to
use a placeholder strategy with CPUs and pick a target for when I'll get
the one I want (usually 50-60% of the introduction price). I don't think
that is going to be effective for this one as the yields are probably
not going to be very high as it's difficult to make, demand will be
high, and a new socket is just around the corner which could make this
one get end of lifed fairly quickly. I could be wrong, but I just don't
see the price falling quickly on this one.

Most people buying this will already have a S939 board and they wont
have the full cost of a new system, but I'm starting from scratch if I
go 939 -- so the system cost has to factor into it. Even the cost of
the placeholder CPU isn't cheap unless I can find one used (which may be
what I end up doing after venice hits the streets I expect a fair number
of them to be available then).

I'm always behind the leading edge, but I want at least one major
upgrade available (and hopefully cheap) for the next system I buy.

Ahh, decisions decisions. Computers depreciate worse than diamond rings.
I think I'm going to have to tough it out another couple months with my
current rig.

At least diamonds are forever ;)
