Why is the option to input AIV files greyed out? I have a Sony HC32 with
USB2, (my Dell laptop doesn't have Firewire) and AVI files can be uploaded
through the Sony software, but not through Movie Maker.

Sorry if this is a newbie question, but I am totally new to this.

Thanks

Because the USB is an analog connection rather than a digital one so you
can't import DV-AVI (a digital format) because there is no digital source.

Best thing for you to do is purchase a PCMCIA card with firewire imputs.

Cari,

I've ordered a Firewire card, but it will take a while and I'm impatient to
get going.

However, it's not a simple as you say because the Sony software ***will***
import the avi file over USB (which is a digital connection, just not a
synchronous connection) - so its software related not just USB.

Maybe it's just a design feature (aka bug) in Movie Maker (?)

It's probably a proprietory AVI file and not a DV-AVI file. As I'm sure you
are aware, there are thousands of different AVI files, it's just a matter of
what codec is used to compress them.

Thank you.
