I have a film which is in an avi format but I want to edit some frames out
of it because I dont want my kids to watch them but every time I try to
inport it from my hard drive I get this message

avi cannot be inported because the codec required to play this file is not
installed on your computer if you have already tried to download and install
the codec close and restart windows movie maker and then try to inport the
file again.

I have ticked the box in tools which says download codecs automatically
and closed down windows movie maker and restarted my computer but sill it
will not inport it

an help would be greatful

Well first let's find out with which codec the AVI was originally encoded.
Download and install G-Spot codec identifier and use it to analyze the AVI
file. It will tell you which codec you need to find.

It is probably either DIVX or XVID.... (www.divx.com and
www.xvidmovies.org). Once the correct codec is installed, then you should
be able to import the file into WMM. Try to avoid 'codec packs'... they
generally cause more trouble than they are worth.

Many thanks works a treat
