inoperable system restore and typing problem with Word

I have windows XP Home. The system restore feature does
not function It won't accept restore dates and it will
not restore on existing set points......
With Word typing does not register on Word documents. I
can type on Outlook Express , enter URL's and set out
questions for search engines but with Word nothing .
This has just occured the syst rest situation has been
a problem for a few weeks. Any thoughts or helpful hints
most appreciated RW
