Powerpoint does not allow "in line" equations but you can add equations using
Equation Editor (which comes with the office products but must be installed)
or Math Type (which is the big brother of Eq. Ed. and is much more
comprehensive and easy to use.) I teach high school math and do almost all my
presentation of material using Powerpoint. Sometimes I have to add
additional text boxes to my slides in order to simulate the "in line" look but
usually the little text I need to add can be typed in Math Type or Eq. Ed
along with the equation. Or I can tab over to create a space for the
equation. (Doesn't work well if you are animating points, however.) I even
have the equations appear like the bullet points in a text box do. The
learning curve for these two products is very shallow.

I agree that "in line" equation support (as in Word) would be a big plus,
though. Maybe we mathematicians should contact Microsoft to add this to the
wish list.
