Ink levels not viewable

I have a Hp Deskjet 5650. The computer's OS is Windows XP Home. The computer
is an Hp pavilion 523n, Since the USB ports on the computer are 1.0, I added
an internal USB card to get to 2.0. The printer is connected to the 2.0 usb
port. When I open the printer assistant and try to check the ink levels the
levels appear blank and this message appears:
" The computer is unable to establish two-way communication with
the device."
The printer prints just fine. What if anything can I do to establish this
two-way communication and see the ink levels?
 
Yes I have installed Xp Service Pack 2 and all Microsoft's updates and
patches. I am using the Microsoft drivers.

I think the drivers mentioned are those for the usb card in the pci slot.

Maybe MS installed some generics and he needs the manufacturer's drivers.

What happens if you use one of the USB1 ports? I'm not certain if the
printer actually supports USB2, and I doubt it would print any faster
with it if it did.
 
I tried the computer's usb ports to no avail. These were the usb 1 ports.
the printer is normally connected to the four usb ports on the card I added
almost two years ago. The problem in visualizing the ink levels was recent.

I have the same problem with a USB2 card, some devices don't work,
printer, external 250GB in caddy, but are fine with mobo's USB1.
You can get passive USB hubs (In the UK Poundland) as well as
active ones with power cube, worth trying if you haven't enough
USB1 ports. Reported speed of USB1 backup is about the same
as reported under USB2 so I guess SATA150 speed is the
bottleneck. On the USB2 card the drive sometimes lost contact and
the backup failed.
So USB1 should be more than fast enough for a printer.
