The bars showing the ammount of ink remaining on my Epson 400 have
disappeared.
How do I get them back?

Re-install the software if restarting your computer won't do the trick.

Thanks. I will try this in the next few days. The pc belongs to a friend and
I won't be there immediately

Yes, I think the same holds true for parallel printer cables. They can
come wired for bi-directional communications. Make sure yours is, and
that it not damaged and the connectors at the printer and computer ends
don't have any bent pins or other obvious faults.

Have you recently upgraded to Windows XP and since then the status bar
has disappeared? This has happened to some friends of ours and you
have to download the XP drivers from Epson's website. the downside is
that they don't appear to support the Epson 400 in XP so if this is
the cause of the problem then you'll just have to wait for the
flashing red lights to indicate when the cartridge needs replacing.
