Initializing Places dialog lock Word, Excel, etc. I just installed Office
2007. When opening of saving a file, I get a "Initializing Places" dialog
that never goes away and never completes. I let it run for hours and it does
not initialize the places bar. I cannot save any files or open any files
through the Open dialog.

Please help.

Thanks,

Leo

Here is what worked for me:

This solution is not really a workaround, but isn't a true fix. But it at least isn't as intrusive as disabling/disconnecting/deleting your mapped drives, which is the solution you'll find in other forums:

1. While in your MS Office 2007 program (I used Word), left click the
Office button in the upper left and choose "Open".
2. Here you'll see the Places Bar on the left ("Trusted Templates",
"Recent", "Desktop", "My Documents", "My Computer", "My Network Places" and
"Office Live"
3. Right Click "Office Live" and choose "Remove"
4. Left click "My Network Places", select all items that appear in the
window to the right, and choose "delete". This will maintain your "Entire
Network"; don't worry.
5. Close MS Word
6. Re-open and try to "Save as". Worked like a charm for me.

Allen,

Not to look a gift-horse in the mouth, but if the original problem is that people can't get to Save as or Open, suggesting that the choose "Open" in the fix is going to be a challenge. At least it was for me.

Solutions that worked for me:

  1. Completely uninstall the Microsoft Office Live add-in via the Windows Control Panel.
  2. Disabling this add-in for each of your Office applications (via Options->Add-ins). The disadvantage of this second option is that you'll have to do it once for each Office application that supports the add-in (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
Best of luck,

Stew

Did either of you try the solution I posted? It worked for me.

Good luck,

for those of you still battling this, check out http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826214

you will see at the bottom the reg keys for the spaces

I found that removing the live userdefined place from all three keys fixed my locking problem

Office 2007 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\Open Find\Places
Office 2003 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\Open Find\Places
Office XPHKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common\Open Find\Places

good luck!

Yes add me to the list.
"Initializing the Places bar"

I have tried the "Show" DWORD Value in the registry but not luck. Leaving
the value 0, but it did nothing.
Hopefully someone will post an answer soon. It is driving me crazy. Okay
crazier.
