How do I get to Initial System Checkpoints? Using the
machines [To access the System Restore Wizard | click
Start | click Help and Support | Click Performance and
Maintenance | click Using System Restore to undo changes |
click Run the System Restore Wizard] gets me back to
September 2003. I want back to Day One (for me): 09 July
2002.

Hi,

You can't. There is only so much space allotted to system restore check
points. As new ones are created, old ones are removed.

What are you trying to fix?

Thanks, Rick. Files from a Win98SE machine were
transferred to this new WinXP machine using Detto
IntelliMover. Prior filtering of data was sloppy and it
appears parts of certain programs were moved when they
should not have been.
Additionally, Microsoft - Works Suite 2002 (with Microsoft
Office XP Version 10.0) came with the new machine, and
Microsoft Office 2000 Version 9.0 was installed. Now,
Word (Version 10.0) is slow to load, is constantly
showing -Do you want to report this Error boxes- , and
"seems" erratic.
Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs shows Microsoft
Office 2000 SR-1 Disc 2 (198 MB) and Microsoft Office SR-1
Premium (184 MB).
When I attempt to change or remove them I get this dialog
box: Add or Remove Programs. This patch program could
not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and
that you can access it, or contact the application vendor
to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch
package. OK
I have a hunch that I've set myself up for big-time
trouble and that going back to the beginning (an Initial
System Checkpoint), now, might be the wise thing to do.
Regards, BJ

Hi BJ,

Probably a damaged registry key, though I don't know enough about Office2000
to point out exactly which one. It should be under:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products

What I would suggest is that you scroll through the keys below this one and
identify which one belongs to the Office suite. Look in the right pane at
the ProductName string to identify which program belongs to each key. Click
on the one for Office2000, then file/export and copy it to your desktop.
Then delete that key, close the registry editor and retry doing a repair
installation of Office.
