having accepted an upgrade for XP, I now have a
Administrator button to press before the computer will
boot to the normal screen. I am the only user and this is
a waste of time. How can I revert to the original start
up without this useless additional user page? Not sure
which of the upgrades brought this useless feature!

Hi,

It was the installation of the .net framework that caused this. It adds a
user account, so the machine stops at the Welcome screen now.

Start/run "control userpasswords2" (without the quotes).

Uncheck the box requiring a username and password, click apply/ok and follow
the prompts to set up a default logon.

Also, you should not run as the administrator, you should create your own
user account and use it instead. Use the administrator as a fail-safe in
case something munges your account. If you only use the admin account and it
gets buggered, you will have nothing to fall back on.
