initial load slow

Are there any settings that I can ajust to increase to speed at which my home
page is loaded?

Right now, it takes an extremely long time to load a very basic homepage (1
image 6kb, some text and a link bar). Once the load the rest of the site is
very fast... just that initial load that is so very painful.

Anyone have any tips or ideas!?
