Initial Computer Setup help

Hi there, was wondering if you could give me some advice on setting up a
computer once ive built it.

The computer will be eventually running win xp sp1, Once ive built the
computer what exactly do i do?

Do i start the computer and be taken straight into dos? and then run fdisk
to set up the partitions.. I will be wanting 2 seperate partitions, i.e C:\
and D:\ but i dont know exactly how to go about this :s

Also, is it easy to set up all the peripherals, such as CDRW, floppy drive
etc?

Do i just set the cdrw up as master? or am i totally wrong here

the harddrive is usually setup as primary master

if you have a single cd you can put it on the same ide channel as slave

but it should also work on the 2nd ide channel as master or slave


once the machine is built you can partition your drive using fdisk
or the utility that came with your harddrive
if you have a large drive be sure to use the newset version of fdisk...
as came with winME (IIRC win98 fdisk was only good for 64gigs or so)

once you have your drive partitioned as primary and logical/extended

all you need to do is set the bios to boot off your cd
then put in your XP cd and go...
the installer will give you the option to format your drive

Or, you can leave the disk unformatted and format it with XPs install
routine. Create a partition in the unpartitioned space to become C: drive to
install XP on and, after XP is installed, go into 'computer management' to
partition the remaining space as you see fit.
 
The first thing you should do when first powering the computer is to
invoke the BIOS setup routine (hit the DEL key) and go through each
setup page and make sure the settings are appropriate to your
hardware. Since you have to install the operating system, the boot
order should be set to CD-ROM first. Once you're done, save the
settings, put the Windows XP CD in the drive and reboot.
