Information Sent to Microsoft

I am trying to decide if XP is for me. One "con" I've
heard is that Windows XP send information back to
Microsoft automatically. Does anyone know what
specifically. If I crash while editing a photo, does the
photo get sent? Do other registered files get sent? Does
something equivalent to System Registry get sent? Where
can I find this information. Can I turn off automatic
reporting? If not, why is this information useful to
Microsoft?
Thanks.

Hey, IMO, you're worrying too much and reading too much into all that stuff.
Yes, Microsoft has a setup so that if a program crashes, you could elect to
send the crash file to them - but you don't have to, and it's not required.
I never have.

And consider this --- for as long as XP has been available --- if your fears
were at all warranted or true -- don't you think you'd be reading about this
issue day in and day out? But you're not, so set aside your fears.

Frankly there are many people who are so concerned with Microsoft invading
their privacy, and yet don't think twice about connecting to Napster / Kazaa
/ or the like. Frankly, I would be more concerned with the the latter ...

Just my .02 worth ...

Sami;
Another point, if Microsoft already has a fix for the particular error
you had, you are given the information for the solution.
1. Helps improve the OS by giving Microsoft the ability to see in
near real time where the problems are and work on solutions for more
common issues.
2. You get solution to your problem almost as fast as problem
happens.
This is rare, but I have seen it a few times.

The following links will give info on what programs and information are
sent by XP when it phones home.
