It is generally recommended to install the older versions first, but some have
reported no problems going the other way.

Mostly when you have multiple versions you have to stop depending on what
Windows thinks is the registered program for MDB files. This means no
double-clicking to open files. That is because each version of Access that you
open will register itself as the default program.

If you create shortcuts that explicitly point to the correct Access version or
open Access first and then the file you want then there are few other issues to
deal with.

That's the exact combination I have at present, and am having no problem.

It's not essential, but a common recommendation is to install them in
chronological order (the reason I say it's not essential is because some of
the MVPs have deliberately installed in the opposite order, just to see
whether there are any problems). It's essential that you install them into
separate folders, but the defaults for the two versions should be good
enough for that, too.

You might encounter a "Access has no license" error when you start up Access
97. Don't worry, it's a common problem, usually caused by, of all things, a
font. See http://support.microsoft.com/?id=141373

As well, go into the folder where you've installed Access 97 and look for a
few files that have an SRG extension. Rename them and create new empty files
with the same names. These are "self-registering" files that ensure that
Access 97 remains the "dominant" application. The files MUST exist, but they
don't have to contain all of the instructions that the default ones do.

Since you're now going to have databases created in multiple formats on your
machine, you might want to look into a 3rd party product to ensure that the
correct version of Access is used for each database. Ones that I'm familiar
with include:

AccVer, from David Aylott http://www.aylott.com.au/software.htm
Total Access Startup, from FMS Inc http://www.fmsinc.com/products/startup
Access Opener, from Donn Edwards
http://www.worship.co.za/BlackandWhiteInc/AccessOpener.htm

They work together without getting in the way of each other no matter which
order they are installed, I my experience.

The only thing to watch out for is when double-clicking an mdb in Explorer
it may open the database in the last version of Access that you ran on that
workstation.

If all the mdb's etc are lauched from fully qualified shortcuts there should
be no problem.

Install A97 first. Apply all service packs.
Check that it works.
Rename MSaccess.srg as MSaccess.sav
Create a new empty file MSaccess.srg
Create a shortcut to A97

Install A2003 to a different folder. Do a custom install. Do
not let Office 2003 uninstall A97.

The SRG file is the Self Registration file for A97. If you
replace it with an empty file, the .mdb registration will
stay with A2003. When you double click on an MDB you will
get A2003. Use the short cut to A97 to use A97.

If you do not replace the SRG file, MDB registration will
point to whichever version was used last, and switching
between versions will be slower.

That's all
