The yellow shield offers the following two updates, which appear to
install in the usual way :

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Update for Windows Server 2003 and
Windows XP x86 (KB982168)

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 Security
Update for Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP x86
(KB979909)

The yellow shield disappears for about a minute, then reappears,
offering to install the same two updates ! The only way to get rid of
these is to select the manual update, and uncheck the updates, etc.
How to assess the consequence of doing this ? Do they actually get
installed as indicated ?

Other's thoughts and discussion most welcome & thanks ...

I would not tolerate using a computer that did not have all the security
updates installed so ignoring the shield is no good as far as I am
concerned.

How did you get on with Microsoft 'get help now' support people?

Did they tell you to download and run the net fix utility, then reinstall
the.net frameworks then go through the update process again? ;)

Haven't actually approached M$ yet.

Where do I contact the 'get help now' support people ?

Latest from M$ : "Working to resolve your problem."

Thanks or keeping us informed.
Maybe they'll send out an update to fix their update .. hope it works .. or
they'll have to send out a further update to fix the update that is supposed
to fix that update ;) .. I've replied to about 3 other newsgroup posters who
have the same problem.

The following from M$ ACTUALLY WORKED :

Dear Customer,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Windows Update Support. My name is
Joyce and I am glad to work with you. You can contact me directly by
sending an email to (e-mail address removed) with the case ID
SRX1133734698 in the subject line.

From your description, I understand that Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5
SP1 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB982168) and
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 Security
Update for Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP
x86(KB979909) failed to install. We will work together to resolve this
specific issue through the course of the case. If there has been any
misunderstanding, please let me know. I understand the inconvenience
you have experienced. Please be assured that I will do my best to help
you.

This issue can be caused by a damaged .NET Framework component. Based
on its current status, I suggest trying the following troubleshooting
steps.

Step 1: Remove .NET Framework using removal tool

================================

1. Please download the tool from the following link:

http://cid-27e6a35d1a492af7.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Blog_Tools/dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip

Please Note: The third-party product discussed here is manufactured by
a company that is independent of Microsoft. We make no warranty,
implied or otherwise, regarding this product's performance or
reliability.

2. Please save the zip file (dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip) from the above
link to the local Desktop and extract it.

3. Double click cleanup_tool.exe to run the tool.

4. Please follow the instructions given.

In the "Product to cleanup:" box, please select ".NET Framework - All
versions".

5. Click "Cleanup Now" button.

After removing .NET Framework components, let's reinstall .NET
Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and its update.

Step 2: Manually downloading and installing Microsoft .NET Framework
3.5

=======================================================

Please note: The size of Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 and .NET
Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 is a little big. Your patience to
download the update is much appreciated.

1. Click the following link:

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 and .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1

http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/0/E/20E90413-712F-438C-988E-FDAA79A8AC3D/dotnetfx35.exe

2. When the file download window appears, please click "Save", and
follow the directions to save it on the Desktop. After downloading the
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 setup file on your Desktop, double-click
to manually install it.

However, if any error is encountered when installing .NET Framework
3.5, please capture a screenshot of the error message:

How to capture a Screenshot:

======================

1. When the error appears, please press the "Print Screen" key
(PrtScn) on your keyboard.

2. Click "Start", click "Run", type MSPAINT, and click "OK".

3. In Paint, click "Paste" under the "Edit" Menu, click "Save" under
the "File" menu, type a file name for the screenshot, choose JPEG as
"Save as type", click "Desktop" on the left pane, and click "Save".

4. Please find the screenshot on the Desktop and send it as an
attachment to: (e-mail address removed) .

Note: When attaching files to emails, the process will vary depending
on the email application being used. While you are composing the
email, most applications will provide you with either an "Attach"
button or Paper Clip Icon to click in order to attach a file. After
clicking this button/icon you must browse to the file you wish to
attach and select it by either double clicking it or clicking it once
and then clicking on the "Attach" button.

Please try my suggestions and let me know the results at your earliest
convenience. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate
to let me know.

Best Regards,

Joyce

Call me a pedant but I'm getting heartilly sick of seeing a hardware
newsgroup filled up with Windows issues. There are several Windows-specific
groups and the chances are that this issue has been resolved and they are
much more likely to have the answer than folks (no matter how helpful) in a
hardware group.

Usenet has thousands of seperate groups for a reason..... All the
well-meaning people who reply to posts like this do nothing to help keep
groups on-topic.

OK, sorry ....

What group should this have been posted in ? ...

alt.comp.microsoft.windows?
alt.comp.os.windows-xp?

They are two of about 200 groups dedicated to windows issues on my news
server. Also MS run their own web forums for this sort of thing. Google
would have likely given you the answers too.

Thanks for response ....
