INF file are INFormation files that outline values for devices and
programs. There are quite a few INF files in just Windows alone. Every
program or driver installed is likely to add another. Any mention in the
message about which INF file was not correct?
The fact that this is a reinstall may have something to do with the message
appearing as the initial INF files have very basic/generic settings. Are
you "repair" installing XP? Did you explicitly select "repair" from the
setup menu? Installing from a retail install CD or from a specialized OEM
CD?
