Inexplicable speed problems...PLEASE help

My internet has been excessively slow lately, despite
any and all attempts to make it otherwise. The actual
problem is that pages load slowly--could this be
something with plugins, or loading images or the like???
I have discarded the possibility it is hardware
related, as my wireless USB adapter works flawlessly on
other computers in the same network, and other adapters
that work well elsewhere, do not on this particular
computer. Also,this a new problem--the internet worked
perfectly a month ago...
I've also attempted to connect directly to our
wireless router using an Ethernet cable--same problem.
HOWEVER, if I connect directly to the broadband modem,
the internet works as expected (that is, as well as it
does in other computers in the house). This would, to
me, preclude it being internet explorer software itself
(although I HAVE reinstalled it).
Thus, I assumed it was the router--after calling
THEIR technical support (Dell) I've been told I have an
appropriate IP address and a more than sufficient
connection speed (11 Mbps), the same as other computers
in the network. Same speed, just not same "speed". So I
resolved to attempt a reinstallation of windows, rather
than an upgrade. This preserved my data, and,
apparently, the problem.
I suppose my questions are these: Will a complete
reinstallation of windows coupled with a deletion of my
old version likely help matters?? And if so, is there
anything in particular I need to back up to facilitate
getting my computer back to its current configuration??
And also, would it actually be a worthwhile expenditure
to pony up 50 or more dollars for pay-for-support?? I
would be...upset is putting it mildly if still the
problem weren't solved, then. Anyway, thanks for your
time and effort. Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.

I'm sure you have already run your anti-virus and anti-malware applications
searching for any possible infections, worms or other malware lurking on
your system. Have you tried resetting the modem/router? Turn the thing off
for about a minute and then power it up again. This can clear problems that
crop up now and again. Have you tried one of the other ports on your
router? There could be a problem with the one you are using now. Not
likely, but still possible. Sorry I wasn't of much help. Good luck. By
the way, great name.
