Ok, besides the really expensive stuff from digi, whos USB hubs are
considered to be really reliable in terms of not crashing under load,
'playing well with others', etc, etc.

thanks

USB is not suited for industrial applications were it has
to run for a long time without user intervention. Use one
of the interface technologies that have been around a bit
longer...

Yeah, try SCSI-1. Maybe SASI?

If only.
Critical systems backed up (from running systems and databases)
to USB devices. Routine.
Option of backup across the internet not available at more than
56kbps, due to perceived use of internet link during working hours.
That is enough for live backup, but that isn't an option (client don't
pay enough for the link) so it's back to manually copying data to a
memory stick then putting it in someone's pocket for the flight to
shore.

Well, there is manual plugging and unplugging involved. Then USB is
o.k.. Still, your client strikes me as a real pain. Seems they have
to experience some donwtime, because the backup is difficult to
find....

They do experience IT downtime. Frequently. It's as
unpredictable as weather downtime, and neither normally stops the drill
bit from turning. Which is all that really counts.

Ok, even more of a pain then....
