Hi, I need to know how to secure an individual file with a
password. This is a MSExcel file that contains very
sensitive data.
Can it be secured by the file system or by Excel? By
secure I mean unable to view it unless you have the
password.

Thanks

W2k does not provide individual files security, if you
need to do so, create a folder and set the proper access
rights to it. or set a password on Excel, but this
password will not prevent the file to be deleted or
overwritten.

My best advice will be to create a folder, moved the file
to this folder and on the security tab of the folder's
properties set the desired access ricght to the users you
need to.

Win2K does support file level security as long as the file is on an NTFS
partition. This has been supported from the start of NTFS.

In later versions of Excel it is right on the Tools menu ->
Protection.

I don't think you can password protect files or folders within the
Windows system itself without 3rd party tools. Encrypt yes, but not
password protect.

'Very sensitive" - I would not trust this level of protection. There
are many commercial services that will break it for a small fee. Look
into PGP.
