During a recent update some kind of indexing program was loaded on my
computer. I hate it! Can I just delete the .exe file that originates the
indexing? I've checked the Knowledge Base on how to turn indexing off, but I
don't seem to have the option that the instructions give. If I can't delete
the .exe file, how do I prevent it from autolaunching at startup?

If all else fails and no solutions are found then you have two options:
First try msconfig (Start/run/msconfig) is the easiest/simplest way.

If that does not work and you want to dig deeper as to what is causing the
problem:
Try Autoruns from the MS Windows SysInternals site:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

AutoRuns will show/list all apps/etc. that load/run when you first boot
(Boot Execute tab),
when you logon (Logon tab) and other programs or services that load (grouped
by labeled tabs) for easy viewing.

It also provides the ability to selectively allows you to stop (use with
care) any program that you don't want to load. You can undo any changes you
have made.

Note: To get additional details on an item in the list you may need to
highlight the item (right click) and use the 'Search Online' option to get
the details, especially useful for the more obscure items in the list.

Third, Better, Option

A much easier and quicker way is to:

1. Install CCleaner, a marvelous little program available at this site:
<http://www.ccleaner.com/>

2. Then use the Uninstall Function under Tools to uninstall Windows Desktop
Search 3.01.

3. Clean up the registry afterwards -- IF you know what you're doing.

Why bother? Just uninstall it from Control panel-add/Remove Programs.....

1. Because it doesn't show up there on some machines.

2. You'll still be stuck with obsolete registry entries that need to be
cleaned up.
