If I stop the indexing service in XP HE do I automatically erase or
get back the space used on my HD by this process?

If not, how & where do I delete those index files?

Goto the Control Panel>Admin Tools.
Computer Management.
Navigate from Services & Applications to Indexing Service.
Here you'll see what Windows reports the Indexing Service to be using.

Found the indexing service and on what partitions;
Finally found a way to delete everything.
