Indexing not working properly

I have the following problems with Windows Desktop Search in Vista Home
Premium:-

The indexing process never completed
I could find some items in Outlook using Outlook's search tool but not
others
I went into indexing options and clicked "rebuild"
For a long time, it said 0 items indexed
Now it always says "waiting to receive indexing status" and never changes

I would like indexing to fully index my documents, MS Outlook items on MS
OneNote items.

Has anyone seen similar behaviour and come up with a solution?

In the last few days, I have started using ReadyBoost. Don't know if that is
somehow involved?

Thanks

Peter

Vista search should index both your emails and documents, OneNote files
included. Keep in mind that the indexing goes on in the background, and may
take days to complete. I suggest you run the Disk Cleanup tool (Accessories
menu > System Tools) prior to rebuilding the index, to prevent the indexing
service from wasting time on litter.

There is a usueful sidebar gadget that will help you monitor the process,
you can read more and download it from here:

I managed to make it work as follows:-

Stopped the Windows Search Service
Opened regedit
Went to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
Search, SetupCompletedSuccessfully was showing 0 as it should be
Changed value to 1
Re -booted
Went back to above registry entry
Changed value to 0
Re -booted
The indexing service then worked normally

I then decided to install Windows Search 4.0 and so far it is great:-

The whole PC was indexed in 1 hour (29,655 items)! Much faster than WDS 3.
The latter took several hours to index everything.
Searches are VERY fast

Nice job Microsoft............

How do you install Windows Search 4.0?
And, I notice that Outlook and my Documents are not being indexed. Can I
add them?

You can also run MSCONFIG (Start - MSCONFIG in search box)

Boot Tab - check Safe box - OK and reboot

When in Safe Mode - MSCONFIG - Boot Tab - uncheck the box
