I am looking for an index or log of files copied on a Windows XP Pro
system - files were copied from a shared folder on a Windows 2003 server to
an external USB drive.

Here's the situation: an employee copied a bunch of files from a shared
folder on an Windows 2003 server to an external USB drive (on his Windows XP
system). Both Win2k3 server an WinXP client are plain vanilla,
out-of-the-box installs, no special software or configuration.

Is there a log or index which shows the names of files which were copied?
Is there any trace of this copy process on either the WinXP or Server
systems?

Thanks very much for any help.

Best to all.

I doubt it.

Just in case the "i doubt it" answer wasn't helpful....

Unless you explicitly set it up that way, then no. In order to have a log of
such an event, you would have to turn on auditing, and then specify that you
want to log *successful* access of a file. Then you must go to the files that
you want to audit, and turn on auditing there. That in itself can be a
problem, because that type of auditing can fill up the event log pretty quick.
