Hello,

I'd like to build a thematic index at the end of a 100 page document,
that currenty already has an index. This is a legal document, and it
appears that it has an index functioning as a table of authorities
(I'm wondering if this should/must be changed).

At the end of the day, I am hoping for this:

THEME (ex, Impeachment) (parent)
Case name #1 with page number (child)
Case name #2 with page number (child)
Case name #3 with page number (child)

The thematic Parent entry is what I want to add, the Child information
is already there. I went through the online help, but am stuck. Seems
like i need to create a 'meta-index' of sorts, ie, having one index
entry refer to another?

Assistance greatly appreciated.

thank you,
w

You can create multi-level index entries. If you create the following XE
fields, you should get what you want:

{ XE "IMPEACHMENT: Case #1" }
{ XE "IMPEACHMENT: Case #2" }
{ XE "IMPEACHMENT: Case #3" }

Hello,

Suzanne: thanks for your prompt reply. You've now responded to 2 of my
problems in as many days, I am grateful. I will try your suggestion
later today. If I understand your response, the process (which may or
may not involve a concordance file) assumes I know in advance which
cases refer to a given theme.

This got me thinking. What would be very convenient is to incorporate
the automark/concordance function into this -- ie, have Word
automatically search for a given list of words/phrases/themes, and
somehow know to associate each "hit" with a certain case, as well as
the page number. I'm not sure this is possible, but if so, presumably
it requires the user to somehow associate a given block of text with
the case.

Anyway, at this stage just curious to know whether or not this is
possible, but such a feauture would be hugely helpful.

Thanks again,
Willem

See my reply to your duplicate question yesterday in the thread "Combine
multi-level index entries with automark/concordance feature?"
