index.htm vs. index.html

We are hosted on a Unix server w/ FP2002 extensions installed. In addition
to the regular home page "index.htm" that FP creates, the Unix environment
apparently calls for an "html" variation, so there are 2 index files in the
web folder. Right now the "html" version is set as the home page, but
people who type in our URL go to the "htm" version by default, and the
navigation bar is missing because the "htm" version isn't the one in the
navigation view.

The right-click menu for these files offers "set as Home Page" as an option.
Is this the proper tool for setting the "htm" file as the home page?

Thanks if you can help me sort this out.

Ask you host if they can set index.htm as the first default document for
your account.

Open your local web in FrontPage and
rename index.htm to index.html. Make sure
FP updates the hyperlinks.
Then "Publish" changed pages only.
When it's done, open the server version in
FrontPage and delete the one named index.htm

This is common as UNIX requires index.html so it
changes it. You then have both index.htm and .html
on the server, but when you publish only the .htm gets updated.
When you delete index.htm from the server,
index.html is opened as the default.
