I am using windows 2000 and IE 6...the index.dat file is
getting too large...is there a way to delete it?? I am not
that computer savvy and I read the articles in the help
section and don't know what their talking about. Help
please...

Change your options for Temporary Internet Files
(Tools / Internet Options / Temporary Internet files / Settings

Apply brute force:

a) Locate your temporary Internet files:
Tools / Options / Temporary Internet Files /
Settings / View Files. Make a note of the
location (and don't tell me it's not there,
because I know it is).

b) If your system partition is FAT: Boot the machine
with a Win98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com,
then use the deltree.exe command to delete
and recreate the folder "content.ie5".

c) If your system partition is NTFS: Start the
machine in Recovery Console mode, then
delete index.dat. It you don't understand "Recovery
Console", follow this path: Start / Help / Search
tab / type Recovery Console / Check out the
"Installation item".

By the way, why do you think the file is too large?
What is the problem with it? Why not just leave it
as it is?

Hi
Yes, you should delete these files because they are a security risk and they get
corrupted as they bloat.

How to delete index.dat files -

log in as a different user (Administrator?).
Delete the folders containing index.dat file under your other profile:

%userprofile%\Cookies
%userprofile%\Local Settings\History
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

(or wherever they are)
Log back in.

HTH

Thanks...I will give it a try.
