I've updated Index.dat Suite to v2.4.1

Thanks to YoKenny kindly offering to test it for me prior to release, I've
completely removed the MoveFileEx API that was reccomended to me for NT
based systems, as it proved to be more trouble than it was worth (wouldn't
work and I had no idea why basically).

Again, thanks to YoKenny, I've also fixed the bug concerning viewing the
Cookies and UserData index.dat file's, changed the "Address's found" to
"Contents found" and a few other minor bug fixes.

Oh, when viewing the file's, it also tells you which file you are/were
viewing when going back to the main window.

Thank you Steven - I assume that I may safely use it now in XP.
Best,
POKO

POKO,
Yes. YoKenny has kindly tested it in XP and all appears well.

Obviously, my saying you will definately not have problems, would be
mis-leading as I can't guarantee it, so I would still ur on the side of
caution when using it. (it doesn't use the API, so once again, you should
view the generated .bat file prior to allowing it to run.... just to be
safe).

Minor update's;

9x/ME file generation routine bug fixed (thanks for mentioning it Karen)
Last searched path now remembered (again.... thanks for suggesting it
Karen).

I've updated Index.dat Suite to v2.4.1

This time I tried the basic install file, as I already have the VB6 runtime
installed. Just to make sure, I did check the 'create desk top icon'
option.
It worked. Thank you for this useful program!
By the way, I find the file name idsuite_upd.exe rather confusing for a
basic installation, when idsuite_upd.zip is the file name for the update.

Onno,
Thanks for the compliments ;o)

Regarding the filename, it was actually because, the Basic Install was
originally intended as an update, rather than "basic" install. I am planning
on changing it to idsuite_basic.exe in the future.

What I'd dearly love to know is why it takes so long to parse the index.dat
files and display human-readable output? Is it good old VB routines?

Actually yes, pretty much.

What I've done is, wrote a function that opens the file's in binary mode >
locates any http://, ftp://, news://, Cookies: and userdata: entries, then
strips them from the file.

It does take longer than I imagined it would when I first wrote it.
Unfortunately, I've not found a way to speed it up.

Convince Steve Gibson to write an assembly language routine to do it. <G>

Greets, Steve.

I tested the latest, v2.42
http://www.it-mate.co.uk/downloads/idsuite_upd.zip

Index.dat Suite now remembers my path, which is very convenient. :)

I want to remark. I just now tried Spider. That program won't even let me
set my path, much less remember it. It wanted all drive D, no other choices.
Then it wanted to delete non-msie files on my D drive, whose names happened
to be index.dat.

The other change for Index.dat Suite, the file generation. Sorry, but cannot
report that it is working here. Not that I mind, I actually rather like a
full run.bat to appear in front of me. Deleting or commenting out lines with
notepad, from there, is pretty natural. Nevertheless, I'll right now run
through a few times, to give you a report.....

Following is run.bat output from putting, in Settings, just one item checked
for delete at a time, each one in turn.

[X] History

deltree /y D:\ZTMP\MSIE\HISTORY\HISTORY.IE5\INDEX.DAT
deltree /y D:\ZTMP\MSIE\BCACHE\MSIE\CONTENT.IE5\INDEX.DAT
deltree /y d:\ZTMP\MSIE\HISTORY\*.*

[X] Cookies

deltree /y D:\ZTMP\MSIE\BCACHE\MSIE\CONTENT.IE5\INDEX.DAT
deltree /y d:\ZTMP\MSIE\COOKIES\*.*

[X] T.I.F.

deltree /y D:\ZTMP\MSIE\BCACHE\MSIE\CONTENT.IE5\INDEX.DAT
deltree /y d:\ZTMP\MSIE\BCACHE\MSIE\*.*

[X] TMP

deltree /y D:\ZTMP\MSIE\HISTORY\HISTORY.IE5\INDEX.DAT
deltree /y D:\ZTMP\MSIE\BCACHE\MSIE\CONTENT.IE5\INDEX.DAT
deltree /y d:\ZTMP\XX\\*.*

Not quite sure whats happened here as tests on 3 of my 98SE systems didn't
indicate this, but I will look into it asap and see if I can find out whats
going on.

Thanks for letting me know :o)

Maybe if you were up to testing while using custom paths on a different
drive? My regkey setting is like this:

[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders]
"Cache"="D:\\ztmp\\msie\\bcache\\msie"
"Cookies"="D:\\ztmp\\msie\\cookies"
"History"="D:\\ztmp\\msie\\history"

I can't remember offhand what Windows wants, as far as when to change those
registry values to make it accept changes there. Whether you can do it in
that user profile's session, and just reboot right away. Or whether you need
to eg do the merge a bit earlier in load up. You might already know...

Karen,
Something has just sprung to mind.

When you are checking the items for deletion and exclusion, are you also
doing so in the main list? (items found)

Items unchecked will be included
Items checked will be excluded.

I know this is silly and you've probably checked this, but, after looking,
it is the only thing I can think of.

The Settings options are required, however, they do not cover all of it. Due
to the issue concerning the PCHEALTH file, the items you wish to delete,
must remain unchecked (items you do not want to delete should be checked)
after the search has completed, and the file's found.

Hope this makes sense?

Steve. I tried all manner of random checking and unchecking. Yet
throughout, I'd paid fairly little attention to checking the boxes
at the main interface, viewing that as just for telling what file
to view. So, my main emphasis stayed with the Settings dialog.

Okay. I followed your instructions...

Main interface. Check [X] items you want NOT-deleted.
Settings dialog. Check [X] items you want YES-deleted.

Results?

The run.bat files generated come out as designed. Settings chosen above are
written correctly to the file.

Well, darn, Steven! That means you'll have to give me some more, to come up
with new plans for your next programming task. ;)

I feel this is actually my fault as I have not made this clear on the
program's UI. I am planning on making it clearer in future.

Glad to hear that was the cause ;o) (well not glad but, you know what I mean
