Index Building from T of C

Is there a way to start with a base index that is built from the Table of Contents in a .doc file.

I'm afraid what you want to do is not clear. You also don't mention the version of Word involved,
which could be useful for suggesting scenarios.

Basically, though, Word requires XE fields in order to generate an index. These have to be inserted
into text, and any time a field updates, anything that's been inserted into the field's result is
lost. So you couldn't insert XE fields into a TOC and expect them to remain once the TOC is updated.

At best, you could use a macro, perhaps. But without understanding better what it is you want,
that's about all anyone can say.

Sorry about not identifyng that I have Word 2000 (9.0 4402 SR-1).

I am trying to simplify building an index by having word first index each and every paragraph heading. Following that, I would add specific additional key words, topics, etc

My gut feel is that this cannot be done, but perhaps there is a way

Mmmm. Like I said, perhaps with a macro. But I don't understand what you mean by
"paragraph heading". Do you mean all paragraphs formatted with Heading styles (or
some other, specific, styles)? And would you really want the index entry to be
the full paragraph (heading) text?
